The sector
What the charity sector in Northern Ireland looks like
The charity, voluntary and community sector supports people and communities across Northern Ireland every day—delivering services, running programmes, campaigning for change and bringing people together.
- Organisations range from small community groups with a handful of staff to established national charities delivering services region-wide.
- Many roles are directly funded by grants, contracts, fundraised income or public sector commissioning, which shapes how posts are advertised and how long they run.
- The sector employs professionals in almost every discipline—finance, digital, HR, communications, care, youth work, policy and more.
- People join the sector at every career stage, from first roles and placements through to executive leadership and trustee positions.

Working life
What working in the sector is really like
Charity roles can be varied, purposeful and demanding. Knowing what to expect helps you decide whether a role is right for you.
- Roles are often broad. In smaller organisations you may cover several areas of work rather than a single narrow remit.
- Contracts can be fixed term where posts are funded by a specific grant or programme, and many are extended when funding continues.
- Flexible, hybrid and part-time working is common, and many organisations offer enhanced leave and wellbeing support.
- Salaries are usually benchmarked and published openly, with clear pay scales in larger organisations.
- Values matter. Employers look for people who understand the cause and can work respectfully with the communities they serve.
Glossary
Sector language explained
Charity job adverts use terms that may be unfamiliar if you are coming from another sector. Here is what the most common ones mean.
Trustee
A volunteer member of a charity's board who holds legal responsibility for governance, strategy and the proper use of funds.
Person specification
The list of essential and desirable criteria for a role. Applications are usually scored against it, so each criterion needs evidence.

Money given for a specific purpose or programme. Roles funded this way are often fixed term and tied to agreed outcomes.
Beneficiaries
The people, communities or causes a charity exists to support. Some organisations prefer terms such as 'service users' or 'participants'.
Monitoring and evaluation
How organisations track delivery and demonstrate impact to funders, boards and the communities they serve.
Access NI check
A criminal record check required for roles working with children or vulnerable adults. The employer arranges this after an offer.
